Musical Scales
Musical scales provide the backbone to music. Simply put, a musical scale consists of passing notes between octaves. Like stepping stones, the notes of a scale move up and down between octaves. Different cultures and different tastes have produced dozens of scales. The steps that make up these scales are different and so is the harmony they produce. In many cases the difference between theses scales can be heard easily (i.e. major and minor). Some difference are more subtle. A study of music theory begins with and understanding of scales because it is from scales that all else follows.
